The imposing Este Castle, sited in the very centre of the town, is iconic of Ferrara, The Cathedral of Saint George, designed by Wiligelmus and consecrated in 1135, is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture. Near the cathedral and the castle also lies the 15th-century city hall, that served as an earlier residence of the Este family, featuring a grandiose marble flight of stairs and two ancient bronze statues of Niccolò III and Borso of Este. The southern district is the town’s oldest, crossed by a myriad of narrow alleys that date back to the Early Middle Ages.Your visit can include a delicious traditional lunch in one of the many fine restaurants.
The second stop is The Monselice Castle, at the foot of the Rocca hill stands a majestic complex of buildings named Cini Castle, which was turned into a medieval dwelling house, a defensive tower and then into a Venetian villa between the eleventh and the sixteenth century. The Castle is formed by four principal structures; the most ancient one is composed of the late eleventh-century building called Romanesque House and of the Little Castle. During the thirteenth century the Castle was enlarged with the fortified building called the Ezzelino’s Tower. The large rooms in the keep are characterised by “towered” fireplaces made by the fourteenth-century Da Carrara noble family of Padua.
